Happy 70th, Bobby Z
The Beatles and the Stones were never hard to find in those skate videos that were being released back when video circulation rarely made it out of a shop VHS player. Who could forget the Blind section in Virtual Reality with “A Little Help From My Friends”? Or “I Am Waiting” as it introduces Photosynthesis?
But skating never really took to Dylan in terms of video soundtracks. It would probably take a certain style of skating to fit well with a Dylan song though. Who knows, maybe numerous video parts began the editing process with a Dylan song in mind. But as a result of skate videos dictating most of my time and tastes, I didn’t care to listen to Dylan, or give him a chance. Luckily Matt O’Connor started running Dylan albums in the shop back in 2002:
(Dylan’s Talking WW3 Blues Playing in the Shop Stereo)
“Hey O’Conn, is this the Vasalines?”
“Holy shit, are you serious, dude?”
….it was slightly humiliating, but skateboarding never told me it was awesome, so how was I supposed to know!
So enjoy the slow delivery of an amazing work on song writing in the youtube above. And maybe go get the entire thing tattooed somewhere It’s that good.
