A Seattle Papercut
A few weeks back my face almost melted from the excitement of discovering that San Francisco warm sound alchemist, Jason Quever, and his band The Papercuts, would be coming through Seattle. Listening to ‘You Can Have What You Want’, the latest Papercuts release, there is a fair amount of spaceships, machines, and a general vibe that you’reĀ taking a voyage to Jupiter and beyond the Infinite. With this kind of content I figured that the Vera Project, which is located in the middle of all the faux futuristic surroundings that is Seattle Center, would be the ideal spot to hear the new SPACEY jams. But the ideal scenario did not really come together. The amount of attendees was small and that meant that getting any galactic experience was going to really require all humans in the spacey building to get real real hyped and/or comfortable for the night’s trip……and that did not happen. The set was 29min long and consisted of gems like ‘Tulips’, ‘John brown’, and the ‘Machine Will Tell us So’. Good performance, bad crowd. At one point the girl from ‘Pretty Girls Make Graves’ put any chance of crowd/artist vibe cohesion to rest by yelling a cheeky ‘stay in the pocket!’ during the high desert silence that existed between the brief claps and the music. Not trying to put her on blast, but it was light weight annoying, to me and I’m pretty sure all but one member of the bad. If it sounds like I’m a wee bit crushed, it’s because I am. I was banking on a voyage to Jupiter and beyond the Infinite. That’s what I get for getting all psyched up and stuff.
